Despite Sunderland’s dramatic drop from the Premier League to League One, there has been one thing keeping the fans going.
The emergence of several academy stars has been encouraging to see and relegation has enabled the Black Cats to hand out more opportunities.
Young players like George Honeyman, Lynden Gooch and Josh Maja shot to prominence last year.
They were perhaps given chances that they would never have received in the Premier League.
And this year has seen a new player make the step up to first-team football. Denver Hume has been very impressive.
The 20-year-old is a local lad who has been with Sunderland since he was a schoolboy.

On the final day of last season, he made his debut for already-relegated Sunderland, impressing against already-promoted Wolves.
And the speedy young left-back has taken that confidence into this season, potentially nailing his spot in the side.
He has played six games this season for Sunderland, picking up one assist and scoring the winning penalty in the Checkatrade Trophy to prove his mettle.
Unfortunately, the attack-minded full-back is currently out injured but Sunderland fans are very exciting about this kid.
And the club must reward him with a new deal before Premier League clubs start sniffing around.
Hume’s current contract expires at the end of the season and this should be a priority ahead of the January window.
