In the summer Sunderland were being heavily linked with a move for Swiss striker Florian Kamberi.
However, according to the Scottish Sun, the Black Cats were not ready to meet a £1.7 million asking price to bring him in from Grasshoppers.
The player himself later confirmed he would not have considered Sunderland as he wanted a move to Hibs and did not want to play in League One.
In the end, he joined Hibernian, where he had previously thrived on loan.
“Sunderland didn’t interest me. It was League One. Even if it’s a big club I don’t want to play in a small league.”
– Florian Kamberi on why he rejected Sunderland
At first, it appeared Sunderland had missed out on a gem. The striker scored seven goals and provided five assists in his opening 12 games of the season.

However, as time has gone on, Sunderland clearly dodged a bullet.
“He’s not working hard enough and the point isn’t hitting home…
“This is a criticism but we’ve been sitting on this for weeks and weeks but we’re getting no response from him.”
– Neil Lennon on Kamberi’s performances
He has scored just one goal since October and could now be leaving the club. Hibernian boss Neil Lennon slammed his effort levels recently. He has now been linked with a move to Bristol City, as reported by The Scottish Sun.
Perhaps Sunderland were lucky Kamberi did not fancy a move to the Stadium of Light after all.
