Sheffield United have confirmed their retained list on the club’s official website. Several players have been released and a few more have been transfer-listed, including reported Sunderland target Ben Heneghan.

Fan favourite Paul Coutts will be released alongside Martin Cranie, Daniel Lafferty, Caolan Lavery and Conor Washington.

And seven other players are on the transfer list. The headline names on this transfer list are striker Leon Clarke, who has just returned from a loan spell with Wigan Athletic, and Heneghan.

In January, Heneghan was a target for Sunderland. According to Sky Sports News, Sheffield United considered recalling him from his loan spell at Blackpool to allow him to join Sunderland.

Jack Ross’ men have had their troubles in central defence this season and he might be keen to revisit a move for Heneghan.

The 25-year-old played 48 games for Blackpool during a loan spell with the League One club this season. But he is surplus to requirements at Bramall Lane.

Having managed just one cup game since his 2017 move from Motherwell, Heneghan will be allowed to leave Sheffield United.

The former Chester defender’s contract expires in summer 2020 so the Blades are hoping to cash in now. At the right price, Heneghan could be available this summer. Whether Sunderland rekindle their interest remains to be seen.
