Despite the catastrophic fall in the last two years, there has been one consolation for Sunderland fans.

It is clear that the Sunderland academy is still in full swing. The Black Cats seem to be churning out first-team standard players on a regular basis now.

Of course, it is easier for these players to break through when Sunderland drop down the leagues.

With lesser opposition and big name players leaving, Sunderland have turned to their kids to get them out of trouble.

But it still doesn’t take anything away from the likes of Josh Maja, Denver Hume, Lynden Gooch, Bali Mumba and George Honeyman.

All of these players have been thriving in the first-team and fans are excited to see who could be next to progress from the academy.

Luke Molyneux is a wonder-kid who certainly has the potential to make the cut at Sunderland.

The 20-year-old is an exciting winger and he was handed his debut on the final day of last season.

Many fans expected to see lots of Molyneux this season and he did play four times under Jack Ross this season, although two of those were in the cup.

But he has been given a chance to impress out on loan at National League side Gateshead.

And after scoring his first goal at the weekend, the impressive young midfielder will be eyeing a first-team spot when he returns to the Stadium of Light in January.
