Sunderland have opened up their Championship account with three wins on the bounce.

The Black Cats sit at the summit of the Championship table but after losing Jack Clarke to Ipswich, the need for added firepower in attack is apparent.

A striker is thought to be on Regis Le Bris’ wishlist and with that said, it’s just come to light that they’ve made a bid for one in the Premier League.

Sunderland submit Tom Cannon bid

According to Telegraph journalist John Percy, Sunderland have just submitted a £5m bid for Leicester City striker Tom Cannon.

The Foxes frontman made a £7.5m switch from Everton last summer but struggled for game time under Enzo Maresca and is now up for sale.

Sunderland have formalised their interest with an offer whilst Norwich City, Sheffield United and Stoke weigh up their proposals ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Cannon was named on the bench in Leicester’s Premier League opener against Tottenham but wasn’t involved in the defeat to Fulham on the weekend.

Tom Cannon statistics

Cannon enjoyed a really productive loan spell at Preston North End during the 2022/23 campaign, netting eight times in 21 outings.

He was prolific at youth level for Everton, too, firing in 22 goals in 55 games for the under-21 side.

Aged just 21, the Republic of Ireland international was considered one of the most promising strikers in the EFL just 12 months ago, so Sunderland will be hoping to unlock that potential under Le Bris stewardship.

A telling few days await in the race for his signature.
