In midweek, Sunderland fans were probably left shocked by Papy Djilobodji’s match-winning heroics for his new side.
The £8 million signing from Chelsea was, essentially, sacked by Sunderland after returning late for pre-season training and ‘comprehensively’ failing the club’s fitness tests – as reported by the BBC.
That came after a poor stint at the Stadium of Light with fans unlikely to remember any period of his stay on Wearside positively.
So to hear he was scoring the winning goal in a Coupe de la Ligue clash in midweek would have had Sunderland fans in shock.
However, this weekend saw normal service resume. Guingamp, Ligue 1’s basement side, lost 1-0 at home to Stade de Reims yesterday.
Djilobodji certainly did not help. The Senegal defender was sent off in the 59th minute for a sickening challenge. His attempted clearance saw him kick Reims striker Pablo Chavarria in the face. The reckless challenge put the Argentine in the hospital with L’Equipe reporting he will undergo surgery on a severely broken nose this morning.
It was a reckless and dangerous attempt from the former Sunderland player. Fans at the Stadium of Light brave enough to look up the video will not be surprised by this inept attempt.
