Sunderland fans vent frustration at Will Grigg after penalty miss

Will Grigg joined Sunderland last January.

Sunderland fans have expressed their dissatisfaction with Will Grigg after yet another disappointing night.

Grigg missed a penalty in the EFL Cup fourth round loss against Oxford United. Sunderland would have progressed to the quarter-finals if they had beaten Oxford United last night.

However, it was a penalty shoot-out defeat for Phil Parkinson’s men at the Kassam Stadium. The game ended 1-1 as Marc McNulty cancelled out Rob Hall’s opener but the hosts won on spot-kicks.

Oxford must have been practising as they put all of their penalties into the net. Sunderland missed twice with both Grigg and McNulty failing to convert from 12 yards.

Grigg has had a disappointing spell at Sunderland since joining in January 2019. Something’s not clicking for the Northern Ireland international, who was made famous for the “Will Grigg’s on fire” song while he was in League One with Wigan Athletic.

With just seven goals in 39 games, Grigg has not proven to be the goalscorer Sunderland were desperate for. The 28-year-old’s struggles for the Black Cats have continued under Parkinson. Here are some tweets from Sunderland fans after his penalty miss.
