Sunderland fans urge club to sign playmaker released by English club

Cash-strapped Bolton Wanderers have opted to release playmaker Erhun Oztumer on Thursday as their fight to keep the club afloat continues – and Sunderland fans have reacted on Twitter.

Oztumer, 28, struggled for game time last season as Bolton suffered relegation to League One. He managed just 18 appearances for Bolton after joining the club last summer. He has played once this season, a 2-0 loss to Wycombe.

In a very brief statement on the club’s official website, Bolton confirmed the exit of Oztumer on a free transfer and wished the London-born midfielder all the best for the future. Oztumer is renowned for being just 5ft 3in.

The playmaker has clocked up 137 appearances in England’s third tier after spells with Walsall and Peterborough and has some excellent stats during his time in League One – scoring 37 times and laying on 18 assists.

Though small, Oztumer’s technique and ability to create something out of nothing has seen Championship clubs monitor his situation at Bolton. Charlton Athletic were linked with Oztumer at the beginning of the summer.

But Sunderland fans have considered the signing of the maestro on Twitter as the club continues to look to push for promotion back to the Championship – at what will be the second attempt. Many think signing Oztumer would help.
