Sunderland have signed free agent Joel Lynch on a one-year deal following his release by Queens Park Rangers. Jack Ross has moved to bolster his defensive options ahead of a new promotion bid.
Lynch joins several players in Sunderland’s ranks competing for the central defensive spots. Jordan Willis, Alim Ozturk, Tom Flanagan and Jack Baldwin are also on Sunderland’s books and they have recently released Glenn Loovens.
Sunderland fans now believe Baldwin could be following Loovens out the exit door. The 26-year-old is probably Sunderland’s fifth-choice centre-back after Lynch’s arrival and his performances have been criticised.

Baldwin played 41 games last season after joining from Peterborough United. He has nearly 250 senior appearances to his name and is in the prime of his career but he has struggled for consistency with the Black Cats.
Sunderland are likely to offload one of their central defenders before the end of the transfer window. Baldwin is the most likely to go and Lynch’s arrival could seal this transfer. Here are some tweets from Sunderland fans discussing Baldwin’s future after Lynch joined up.
