Jack Ross’ decision to take Marc McNulty off and replace him with Charlie Wyke is being widely criticised by Sunderland fans. The Black Cats were 1-0 up against Rotherham United when Ross made the 60th-minute change.
But Rotherham came back at The Stadium of Light with Jake Hastie levelling things up. Wyke had chances to win the game for Sunderland and you feel that McNulty would have been more clinical.
Earlier in the game, McNulty scored his second goal in as many matches. The Scotland striker rounded Daniel Iversen and put the hosts 1-0 up inside the first minute of the game.
But Wyke was not quite as effective when he had a golden opportunity to score a winner later in the game. The 26-year-old went through on goal after the Rotherham defender slipped but could only hit his tame effort straight at Iversen.
Sunderland could not find another way past the Rotherham defence and had to settle for a point. Ross has often been criticised during his time at Sunderland and he received pelters for his substitution last night. Here are some fans reacting retrospectively to Wyke replacing McNulty.
Yet ross took him off ? hard to defend that when he was our only attacking threat

Only positive last night – centre halves were troubled by his movement, pace and pressing. So what do we do take him off and bring a lump on who is food and drink to those centre halves; i despair sometimes with what goes through his head at times like that

Taking off mcnulty for wyke has to be the worst decision of the season

It could have been. Maybe if McNulty was still on, instead of Wyke then he scores that 1-on-1 and we win….

Well what a performance ? what a piss poor penalty by McGeady, he should have had a hat trick by half time. Dont understamd why McNulty was taken off and Wyke will probably never win anything in the air ?♀️

So Sunderland 2 centre midfielders were running in sand from 55th minute, both looking injured Jack Ross brings McNulty off for Charlie Wyke ????
