While Sunderland were knocked out of the FA Cup in a replay against Gillingham last night, Black Cats defender Tom Flanagan was undergoing a very different challenge.
He was handed his first competitive international start as Northern Ireland took on 2014 world champions Germany away from home.
The match was a dead rubber with Michael O’Neill’s side already guaranteed a place in the play-offs for Euro 2020 but an impressive qualification campaign came to an end on a low.
The visitors took the lead before succumbing to a 6-1 defeat and Flanagan struggled against the likes of Serge Gnabry, who scored a hat-trick.

Sunderland fans were keen to compare the night’s work of their defender while a patched-up defence didn’t get the job done against the Gills, losing in extra time.
Meanwhile, some Northern Ireland fans were not impressed at all by Flanagan and are fearful about the future without Jonny Evans in the backline as the former Manchester United defender missed last night’s game.
It was an interesting contrast although neither Flanagan or Sunderland enjoyed a particularly fruitful evening.
