Marc McNulty opened his account for Sunderland in the 3-1 win over Accrington Stanley. Sunderland progressed to the Second Round of the EFL Cup after winning at the Wham Stadium – their first victory of the season.
McNulty has looked bright since joining on loan from Reading earlier this summer. And he got his first goal for the Black Cats to give them an early lead. Jack Ross rotated his side and earned a much-needed win after two draws on the bounce.
It took McNulty 17 minutes to get on the scoresheet at Accrington. Chris Maguire teed the Scotland international up and he showed why he has scored so many goals in the Football League.
Colby Bishop equalised for Accrington just after the hour mark as he converted a penalty. But late goals from Aiden McGeady and Charlie Wyke ensured passage to the next round, where Premier League Burnley lie in wait.
McNulty played the full 90 minutes alongside Will Grigg, who has not impressed since his move from Wigan Athletic. Here are some tweets from Sunderland fans discussing McNulty’s impressive display.
Marc McNulty is different class he needs to start ahead of Grigg who’s fire has went out

Praise the lord! Hopefully a springboard to go on and get some momentum going. Good to see McNulty and Wyke on the scoresheet. Onwards and hopefully upwards #safc
