Sunderland are out of the EFL Trophy after suffering a 3-0 loss against League Two strugglers Scunthorpe United. Two goals from Lee Novak and one from Abo Eisa proved enough for an Iron win, as Sunderland saw Luke O’Nien sent off in the second-half.
It was yet another disappointing evening for Sunderland, who are struggling to find any consistency to their game this season.
Phil Parkinson named a strong side for the game but several players struggled to have an impact on the fixture.
One such player was experienced midfielder Grant Leadbitter.

There was plenty of fanfare when Leadbitter returned to his boyhood club from Middlesbrough in January. However, the 33-year-old has not managed to find his best form since the move back to Wearside.
The veteran has been in and out of the Sunderland starting XI this campaign and plenty of fans would rather see the latter.
Plenty of Sunderland supporters took to Twitter after the game to suggest that Leadbitter was not what the club currently needs. Some were even so bold as to suggest that Leadbitter should consider retirement.
Hopefully, the midfielder can rediscover his best form because he could prove a major asset for Sunderland going forward if he did. But at present, it seems the Sunderland fan is struggling to deliver for his boyhood club.
