At the start of the season Sunderland fans were fairly frustrated with the performances of left-back Denver Hume. The 23-year-old was struggling, especially in a left wing-back role, and fans were disappointed at his standard of play.
Yesterday, as Sunderland picked up an impressive 3-1 win at Accrington Stanley, that was certainly not the case.
The defender put in one of his best performances yet in a Sunderland shirt and it did not go unnoticed.
The best moment from his display would have to be his assist. In a difficult position out wide he managed to dig out a left-foot cross. His delivery found Lynden Gooch and the American supplied an acrobatic finish to level the score at 1-1.
It was a tremendous piece of play from the Sunderland left-back and one that he thoroughly deserved based on his performance.
He now has a battle on his hands holding on to the number one left-back slot at Sunderland. Laurens De Bock has arrived from Leeds United on loan and is working on getting up to full fitness after a summer in the wilderness at Elland Road.
With performances like this, the Belgian might have to wait a little longer before getting his chance at Sunderland.
Lovely finish by Gooch, but what about Hume’s 2 touch and cross. Lad comes in for stick, but that was class. https://t.co/tJVm7kDT3o

I thought Hume was absolutely class today. Since we’ve gone back to a back 4 he’s been superb. Not everyone will agree but I think Flanagan is the better partner for Willis though. He’s a real leader n organised in there #SAFC

Nice comfortable away win, look far more settled now, Hume looks different player in a back 4, we’ve been crying out for Dobson to come back in, we looked threatening going forward especially first half, we move on and 11/10 only winning bet of the day which pulled me out #safc

Good result, wasn’t a good performance, but good to get some confidence going before a huge game on tuesday. MOTM for me was Hume and by quite a way. #safc
