A number of Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to comment on reports from The Sun suggesting that Phil Parkinson has held talks with the club’s owners about becoming the Black Cats’ next boss.
Sunderland are still looking for their next manager after Jack Ross’s recent departure. Ross only oversaw two defeats this term, but the board decided to make a change with the top two creating a little daylight.
The Sun reports that the club have a number of candidates on their radar. But it was former Bolton boss Parkinson who has reportedly held talks with Stewart Donald about the position.
It remains to be seen how the talks progress. But it would appear that Parkinson would have a lot to prove if he did get the job as the fans do not seem to be convinced.
Parkinson has won promotion from League One on two occasions, most recently with Bolton Wanderers. However, it is clear that he is not a name that would capture the fans’ imagination.
He is not known for an expansive brand of football. And some fear that he would not be any sort of upgrade on Ross, who seemingly never quite managed to win all of the supporters over during his time in charge.
Sunderland are arguably a side that can afford to think about promotion the moment they get back into the Championship. But some believe that appointing Parkinson would be a step in the wrong direction.
Here is what some of the fans make of the reports…
If Parkinson gets the job, that’ll be my faith in the owners completely gone #safc

I want Ainsworth. Failing that, Pearson. Parkinson not good enough. #SAFC

Don’t want Parkinson, don’t rekon he’s good enough for us and would end up being another Jack Ross

Wonder how many who were so desperate for Jack Ross out would have been happy with Parkinson #SAFC

Not a great field to choose from, but Parkinson would be an average and underwhelming appointment to say the least. Pearson and Super Kev, or Ainsworth would be my choice. #SAFC

If it’s Phil Parkinson btw, I’d rather have kept Ross on. Ainsworth for me all day long #safc
