Sunderland are through to the next round of the EFL Cup after a stellar performance against Premier League side Burnley. The Black Cats ran out 3-1 winners at Turf Moor and deservedly so after outplaying the much-changed Premier League side for most of the game.
It was a fine display and one which saw the likes of Tom Flanagan, Dylan McGeough, and Elliot Embleton highlight what they can still offer Jack Ross.
But it was perhaps most important for Will Grigg.
The Northern Ireland international has not had it easy since joining Sunderland in January.
Grigg has struggled with form and fitness and his last goal for the club came against Coventry City back in April.
A run of 13 games without a goal for the 28-year-old was clearly starting to chip away at his confidence and Charlie Wyke has usurped him as number one striker at Sunderland as a consequence.m
So this goal could prove massive for Grigg and Sunderland. If he has finally got the monkey off his back this can hopefully be the beginning of a hot streak of form for the under-fire Sunderland striker.
Fans at the Stadium of Light are certainly hoping that proves to be the case.
Got to say well done Grigg good on ya gets him a bit of confidence….#SAFC

Wasn’t disappointed at the prospect of going out as long as it was respectable but I’ll take a shock win over a Premier League side and a goal for Grigg 😎 #SAFC

I’m in dreamland again 3 goals from #safc and 1 from Grigg 😍😍

I want Grigg to score another. I don’t think he had the chance to enjoy the first one since he was in shock that he actually scored #SAFC

Take away so far is that Flanagan and Grigg have just been bloody awful all season because they’re actually Premier League quality players playing well below their level #safc

Five on the bounce for #SAFC and beating a Premier League side on their own patch can only do wonders for confidence. Delighted for Will Grigg too – he’s needed a goal and will hopefully push on. One more big game on Saturday before a fortnight’s break.
