Sunderland ace Luke O’Nien has had his red card rescinded. Sunderland announced that their appeal for wrongful dismissal has been successful and O’Nien is no longer suspended.
O’Nien was shown a straight red card during Sunderland’s loss against Peterborough United. Posh were 3-0 up when O’Nien was sent off and Charlie Wyke was later given his marching orders too.
With less than 20 minutes to go, O’Nien was involved in a tussle near the touchline. The 24-year-old and Ivan Toney were involved in an innocuous clash by the sidelines but it ended in an early bath for the Sunderland right-back.
Toney threw himself to the ground clutching his face and O’Nien was subsequently shown a straight red card. This would have been a three-match suspension for the ex-Wycombe man but it has been successfully overturned.
Upon hearing that his red card had been rescinded, O’Nien took to Twitter to say a simple “thank you”. Sunderland will not play this weekend because some of their players are on international duty. But O’Nien will return for the trip to Accrington Stanley on September 14.
Here are some Sunderland fans reacting to O’Nien’s availability.
Shocking decision in the first place!

Common sense has prevailed! Unfortunately, it doesn’t undo the damage done by the referee to the outcome of the game…… to which this decision clearly contributed 😳

Good. Toney needs to be banned for a few games for cheating.

Thank god common sense prevailed! Now hopefully a ban for Toney for deliberately deceiving a match official. Also extra training undertaken by the ref for being so easily duped 😐

Was a very poor ref decision, deservedly overturned.

New it was bs as soon as I read O’Nien had been sent off for “violent conduct”. Seriously if you’re going to pretend someone punch you at least pick someone believable 😂
