Former Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole has joined Dutch outfit VVV-Venlo on a free transfer, as confirmed on the club’s official website.

Cattermole has signed a one-year contact after his spell at the Stadium of Light came to an end this summer and has taken the perhaps surprising decision to start afresh in the Netherlands.

He said: “The club arrived at the right time. For me it offers a new chance. I am therefore very happy that after so many seasons in England I can now work in the Netherlands at a beautiful Eredivisie club such as VVV-Venlo.

“With my experience I can contribute to the development of this young team. I want to move forward with VVV.”

It’s clear from the reaction on Twitter that Cattermole will be missed by the Black Cats fans, who are gutted that his signing at another club has now been confirmed.

They would love him back to try and get them back into the Championship at the second time of asking, but for now they’ll have to be content with seeing how Cattermole gets on in one of Europe’s most technical leagues.
