Sunderland fans react as Lee Cattermole is booked 11 minutes into VVV Venlo debut

Sunderland’s former captain did not take long to show Dutch football what he is about.

This summer saw Lee Cattermole bring an end to his 10-year association with Sunderland. The midfield general was out of contract at the Stadium of Light and following the expiry of his contract he was not retained by the Black Cats.

With Cattermole on Premier League wages, it seemed that Sunderland had to let him go whilst the player himself was looking forward to a new challenge away from Wearside.

A new challenge he has certainly found. Cattermole made his first move abroad in his career by signing with Dutch side VVV Venlo on a one-year deal earlier this week.

This weekend saw Cattermole make his debut for his new club, coming on as a substitute for Danny Post in the 73rd minute as Venlo claimed a 2-1 win away to FC Utrecht.

Cattermole put in a great display but it will not surprise Sunderland fans to hear that Cattermole picked up a yellow card just 11 minutes into his debut for his new club.

The combative midfielder put in a full-blooded challenge and was booked as a consequence. He even joked about it with the Dutch media after the game, as reported FC Update.

“Apparently this has haunted me to the Netherlands.

“I thought I had the tackle under control. But if this is a yellow card here, I have to learn quickly.”

Sunderland fans saw Cattermole get booked a grand total of 87 times and get sent off seven times during his time at the club. So plenty of fans reacted to the news that their former hero had received a caution on debut.
