Sunderland fans react as Duncan Watmore scores on return

Sunderland forward Duncan Watmore marked his return from injury with a goal against Grimsby Town.

Watmore scored Sunderland’s first goal in the 3-2 win over Grimsby in the EFL Trophy. The injury-prone attacker pounced on a rebound and slotted past the goalkeeper from inside the box.

It has been another frustrating campaign for Watmore. The 25-year-old has not featured for the Black Cats since his 15-minute cameo in the first game of the season. But he is now back and he has scored.

There will be a new manager at the helm soon and Watmore will be desperate to impress ahead of their arrival. His goal against Grimsby will give his confidence a much-needed boost.

Watmore’s time at Sunderland has been mixed. He is no longer the lively young new kid on the block. Last season, he only managed 11 league outings, scoring once. The season before, he was Sunderland’s brightest player when fit but he only managed six games (and three assists) in the Championship.

But now, he is looking to steer clear of injuries and guide Sunderland to promotion. Here are some tweets from Sunderland fans reacting to his goal and performance.
