Sunderland fans react as club linked with Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty

Sunderland are reportedly interested in signing Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty this month with the former Hamilton star surplus to requirements under Steven Gerrard – and Black Cats fans have responded excitedly on Twitter.

The Scottish Sun have claimed that Docherty, 23, is to leave Rangers this month and move to Sunderland – with the midfielder preferring a move to the Stadium of Light over Championship clubs Charlton Athletic and Millwall.

Docherty has struggled for game time under Steven Gerrard, managing just five appearances this season – four of which came in Europa League qualifying. The likes of Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo, Steven Davis and more have kept him sidelined.

It is believed Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson has convinced Docherty to move to the north east rather than to London with either Charlton or Millwall. Both Championship sides were keen, after he had a hand in 21 goals last season at Shrewsbury.

Scoring 10 and creating 11, he clocked up a whopping 50 outings for Shrewsbury in one season. Now, he is set to return to League One and play a starring role in Sunderland’s push for promotion from the third tier to the Championship.

Sunderland fans have reacted on Twitter to the reported news that their club are interested in landing Docherty this month, and indeed are set to bring the midfielder to Wearside – just days after announcing a deal for Rangers icon Kyle Lafferty.
