Bali Mumba played his first game of the season in Sunderland’s 3-2 win over Grimsby Town.

Sunderland beat Grimsby in the EFL Trophy and Mumba started the match at right-back. On his 18th birthday, Mumba earned himself a start after Jack Ross’ departure earlier in the day.

It was Mumba’s 10th senior appearance for Sunderland. He was initially seen as a central midfielder but he has been playing at right-back for the U23 team. This is why James Fowler decided to give him a chance at right-back.

Conor McLaughlin has struggled this season and Luke O’Nien has been playing at right-back. But if Mumba proves himself, this could allow O’Nien to move back to the midfield.

Mumba had a major chance to prove himself and earn his place back in the Sunderland side when they return to league action. With a new manager coming in, Mumba had the opportunity to show why he should be a regular.

But Sunderland fans can’t seem to agree on whether the teenager is good enough. Some fans believe he had a great game at right-back while others criticised his display. Here are some tweets about Mumba.
