George Honeyman has experienced the highs and lows that go with being a young captain of your boyhood club this season.
Sunderland is not the easiest club to be at the rudder of anyway – with the way the club have struggled in recent years, the turnover of players and the huge expectations that promotion will be secured straight away.
But for a young player, who cares so deeply for the club but is still learning his trade and improving as a player, it’s a tough job and he had to lead the response after last weekend’s Checkatrade Trophy disappointment at the hands of Portsmouth.
He has done exactly that and led by example when he netted a late winner to secure a 2-1 win over Rochdale on Saturday, to put his side in prime position to get up into the Championship at the first time of asking.

And he showed his passion with his celebration of unbridled joy and many Sunderland fans are loving being led by someone who clearly cares so much about the club.
He has had his critics at times this season but the supporters were full of praise on Twitter after the game, and we’ve put together some of the best reaction…
