Sunderland fans not impressed with Charlie Wyke display

Sunderland picked up a hard-fought win over AFC Wimbledon yesterday but it is hardly a game that will go down as a thriller in the record books. The Black Cats struggled to find any rhythm in a tight display at the Stadium of Light but will be happy to have come away with all three points from the sort of game they have generally drawn this season.

Aiden McGeady scored the crucial goal, it was great to see Lewis Morgan and Grant Leadbitter in action and Jon McLaughlin was excellent in goal, as per usual from the imperious Scot.

Others did not impress. Unfortunately, one of those players was Charlie Wyke.

The striker could not get a foothold on the game throughout as he continues what has been a tough first season with his new club. A summer signing from Bradford City, injury trouble has blighted his first campaign on Wearside and fans have simply not been able to see the best of his ability.

Of course, playing in a two up top could help him, so perhaps a partnership with new signing Will Grigg. However, it feels more like the Northern Ireland international will be replacing him in the starting XI.

After losing Josh Maja in January, Sunderland need Wyke to step up and be counted in attack. Improvements have to be made for the final stretch of the season…
