Sunderland suffered an embarrassing defeat in the EFL Trophy last night as Leicester City’s under-21s defeated them 2-1 at the Stadium of Light.
Phil Parkinson’s side were undone by a George Hirst penalty and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s finish in the second-half after Chris Maguire had given the Black Cats a lead.
The result means Sunderland need to beat League Two side Scunthorpe United next week in order to qualify from their group.
Whilst Parkinson did not field a weak side he did give a chance to some of the fringe players at the club, including Swedish attacker Benjamin Kimpioka.

The youngster is currently at a contract stalemate with the club over his current deal, which expires at the end of the season. He wants more game time before committing his long-term future to Sunderland. But based on this performance, not many Sunderland fans are overly worried about watching the attacker head out the exit door.
The 19-year-old Sweden under-21 international struggled to have any impact on the game and was eventually taken off for Aiden Mcgeady in the 69th minute.
The performance certainly did not have Sunderland fans hoping to see more of the youngster…
