Duncan Watmore scored as Sunderland brushed aside the challenge of Tranmere Rovers last night.
Sunderland won 5-0 to ensure Phil Parkinson got off to a winning start at The Stadium of Light. It was just the response Parkinson would have expected after losing to Wycombe Wanderers last weekend.
Watmore scored the opening goal for Sunderland and that opened the floodgates. Chris Maguire, Lynden Gooch, Will Grigg and Luke O’Nien rounded off the scoring.
Watmore returns from injury

Sunderland fans were delighted to see Watmore back to his best after his injury hell. He has only just recovered from long-term injuries which have limited his playing time over the last two years.
Watmore recently made his comeback in the 3-2 win over Grimsby Town in the EFL Trophy. He scored in that game but didn’t feature in the league until Parkinson took over.
Parkinson has given the 25-year-old two starts in a row and that confidence has helped him significantly. Watmore scored a morale-boosting goal and produced an excellent display.
Sunderland fans voted for Watmore as the man of the match at the end of the game. Here are some fans reacting to his performance.
