Sunderland needed a win against Gillingham last night to snap out of a run of too many draws and they got it with a 4-2 victory at the Stadium of Light last night.
Jack Ross’ side took the lead twice during the first half but were pegged back on both occasions and went in at the interval level at 2-2.
Goals from Will Grigg and Aiden McGeady took the game away from the visitors in the second 45, moving the Black Cats up to third in League 1.
They are four points behind second-placed Barnsley, with a game in hand and while that boost will please the fans, so did the identity of the opening goalscorer.

Lee Cattermole finally scored his first ever goal at the Stadium of Light, despite the fact he joined the club in August 2009 from Wigan.
Cattermole is a holding midfielder by trade so it’s not his job to get into the box and find the back of the net, but that’s still a staggering statistic for someone who has been a regular in the Sunderland side for the better part of a decade.
But the supporters absolutely loved it and were just as impressed by Cattermole’s all-round performance as they were by his goal…
