Sunderland crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle last night.
Earlier this month, Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw by fellow League One side Gillingham at The Stadium of Light. This set up an unwanted replay on Tuesday night.
Sunderland’s options were depleted but Will Grigg returned from illness. The Northern Ireland striker led the line for Sunderland but failed to inspire them to a win.
The Black Cats lost 1-0 after extra time, which was probably the worst-case scenario. Brandon Hanlan fired past Lee Burge on 105 minutes to seal Sunderland’s fate on a cold night in Kent.
Grigg struggles

Once again, Sunderland fans were highly critical of Grigg’s performance. The 28-year-old just hasn’t got going since making a big-money move from Wigan Athletic.
Grigg has always scored prolifically at League One level – until he joined Sunderland. His confidence has completely evaporated and he has only scored twice this season to continue his rotten form.
Sunderland fans took to Twitter to share their views on Grigg, who was replaced on 113 minutes. Here are some of the best tweets.
