Sunderland fans frustrated by Conor McLaughlin’s performance against Rotherham

Conor McLaughlin was withdrawn after 70 minutes.

Sunderland fans have been heavily criticising summer signing Conor McLaughlin on Twitter after another poor game. McLaughlin played at right-back against Rotherham United, allowing Luke O’Nien to move into midfield.

But McLaughlin’s performance was poor. He struggled all game against the pace and direct approach of Rotherham winger Jake Hastie. And, eventually, he was caught out of position for Hastie’s equaliser in the 1-1 draw.

The Northern Ireland international picked up a yellow card and his night ended early on 70 minutes. After the Millers levelled the scores, Jack Ross took McLaughlin off and brought on Chris Maguire.

McLaughlin only joined Sunderland earlier this summer on a free transfer after leaving Millwall. But his performances this season – at right-back and left-back – have drawn criticism from the Black Cats faithful.

The 28-year-old already faces an uphill battle to keep his place in the side and change the Sunderland fans’ minds. Ross could put O’Nien back at right-back for the next game and drop McLaughlin.

Here are some tweets from Sunderland fans discussing McLaughlin’s performance against Rotherham.
