Roberts is reportedly keen to return to England in an attempt to kickstart his career.

Since joining City in 2015 for a reported £12million, Roberts has had several loan stints.

He impressed during three separate loan spells with Celtic, winning three Scottish Premiership titles and two Scottish Cup winners’ medals.

Brendan Rodgers said in May 2018: “He’s a player we’d love to keep, he’s a fantastic young player.”

Roberts has also played for Spanish outfit Girona, plus English sides Norwich, Middlesbrough and Derby.

The former England youth international can play at centre-forward, at No. 10 and on the flanks.

His arrival would provide cover for Nathan Broadhead, who’s out with a hamstring injury.

Roberts would also competition for Aiden McGeady in the second half of the season.

Plenty of Sunderland fans are excited about the prospect of Roberts joining the Stadium of Light:
