Yesterday saw Sunderland sack Jack Ross after an indifferent start to the new League One season. Despite impressive progress in the EFL Cup, the Black Cats’ league form continued to show inconsistency. Following on from failure to win promotion last term, Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald decided it was time to move on and find a new manager.
Plenty of names have already been mentioned as potential replacements. Initially, Sam Allardyce appeared a frontrunner but he has subsequently pulled out of the running. Daniel Stendel was sacked as Barnsley manager earlier in the day and is also being linked.
But another former Sunderland boss is also being suggested as the potential new boss.

The man in question is Roy Keane. The Irishman took over at Sunderland back in 2006 with the club sitting in the Championship relegation zone. He went on to lead the club to the Championship title that season.
Keane left in December 2008 with Sunderland struggling in the Premier League and his uncompromising style divided players and fans.
Today, it still does. Plenty of Sunderland fans want to see Keane return. They feel the Manchester United legend’s forthright personality is exactly what the current team needs to thrive.
However, others feel the modern player simply won’t respond to such treatment and also point out the fact Keane has not been a first-team club manager since a disappointing run as Ipswich Town boss ended in January 2011.
Here is how Sunderland fans have reacted to Keane being a potential option as their new manager…
