“Will Grigg’s on fire” is yet to ring around The Stadium of Light this season after a poor start to 2019/20. Grigg has struggled in all three of Sunderland’s games this season, including last night’s EFL Cup win over Accrington Stanley.
Grigg started in the opening game against Oxford United, which ended in a 1-1 draw. He was introduced as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town last weekend. Then, he returned to the starting line-up as Jack Ross made six changes for the trip to Accrington.
It was a big night for Grigg but he failed to step up while others shone. The Northern Ireland international was hooked in the second half with his replacement Aiden McGeady scoring Sunderland’s second goal to restore the lead.
Prior to that, Marc McNulty – who started alongside Grigg – had given Sunderland the lead with a cool finish. And Charlie Wyke returned from injury to seal the win with a third goal.
With McNulty, McGeady and Wyke all scoring, Grigg is surely falling down the pecking order. The 28-year-old struggled to make an impact last night and here are some tweets about his display.

Damning night for Will Grigg...
- McNulty scores, hits the bar, couple of other chances.
- Big Charles scores 10 minutes after coming off the bench.
- McGeady... walks past three defenders and sticks it in.#SAFC
