Sunderland assistant backs Leeds United outcast to be a hit

Leeds United-owned defender Laurens De Bock is set to play his first game in English football since the March 2018 draw with Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

The Belgian struggled for form after joining Leeds United from Club Brugge and Marcelo Bielsa decided he was not in his plans going forward last summer. He was therefore sent out on loan to KV Oostende and this summer was again told he had no future at Leeds.

He eventually joined Sunderland on loan until the end of the season. He has seemingly done enough to prove his fitness and will be in action tonight as Sunderland face Sheffield United in the EFL Cup. At least, that is according to Sunderland assistant boss James Fowler, in conversation with the Northern Echo.

“De Bock’s played at a decent level as well in European football, so it’s one we’re looking forward to. He’s more experienced than Denver Hume, and I’m sure he’ll be good competition as well.

“[He provides] competition for Denver [Hume], and someone he can hopefully learn from as well within training every day and games, will make him a better player in the long run.”

It seems De Bock has very little chance of winning back his first-team spot at Leeds United. Therefore this is a crucial loan deal for the Belgian.

A permanent move to Sunderland would be fantastic for the Bielsa outcast, especially if it comes after a successful promotion bid in League One this season.

Leeds fans will undoubtedly be expecting De Bock to struggle against Premier League opposition after his struggles in West Yorkshire. But hopefully, he can find some form at his new club to help facilitate a permanent exit, starting tonight.
