The Sunderland youth product was replaced by Emre Can in the starting line-up, with Lucas Leiva also coming on as a substitute to fill the holding midfield role but neither enjoyed their afternoon in the north east.

Can was in for a torrid afternoon were nothing quite came off, and whilst Lucas broke up the play he struggled with the pace of Sunderland’s counter attack at times. What was clear was that neither is capable of the all round displays that Jordan Henderson has been producing.
