Sunderland can’t afford to lose Jermain Defoe

He may have had two fantastic opportunities by being gifted two penalties, but the Sunderland number 18 showed exactly why they don’t want to allow him to depart for West Ham.

Defoe kept his head and remained cool, calm and composed to expertly finish both penalties and give Simon Mignolet no chance of making it four clean sheets from his last five games.

It was clear to see why Defoe is wanted by West Ham, but for Sunderland his goals could be the difference between relegation and survival. A couple more displays like this one and he will have been worth turning down any bid that comes from London for the ex-Spurs man.
