BBC Sport pundit Glenn Murray criticised Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson for a missed effort in the Carabao Cup encounter with Newcastle United.

The Chelsea striker continues to split opinion following his £32million move to Stamford Bridge from Villarreal in July.

Jackson scored his seventh goal from 16 Premier League outings when he slotted home in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United at the weekend.

However, the 22-year-old has also received criticism for missing numerous opportunities in front of goal for the Blues.

In Tuesday night’s quarter-final at Stamford Bridge, Jackson spurned a great chance in the 55th minute of the game which would’ve restored parity for Chelsea.

He collected Armando Broja’s pull-back, took one touch and then hit a low shot on the spin that went just past the post.

Murray, commenting on BBC Radio 5 Live – via the BBC Sport website – noted Jackson’s body language and commented on the missed opportunity.

“Nicolas Jackson stands with his hands on his head as he knows that was a glorious chance, that sums up his Chelsea career,” said Murray.

Jackson ended up coming off for Chelsea in the 69th minute. Mauricio Pochettino replaced him with Christopher Nkunku, who made his long-awaited debut following injury.

The Blues trailed from the 16th minute after Callum Wilson pounced on a Benoit Badiashile error to slam home with the outside of his boot.

However, Chelsea equalised in second-half injury time through Mykhaylo Mudryk, who made the most of Kieran Trippier’s poor backwards header to finish past Martin Dubravka.

The Blues then triumphed in the ensuing penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals of the competition.
