‘Such an asset’: Some Sunderland fans rave about 24-year-old’s ‘superb’ display last night

Sunderland maintained their unbeaten start to the League One campaign thanks to their win at the Stadium of Light last night.

The Black Cats ran out 1-0 winners over Crewe on Wearside, courtesy of Luke Offord heading Lynden Gooch’s cross into his own net on the stroke of half time.

Sunderland dominated proceedings for most of the game, weighing in with 20 shots in total, and should really have routed their opponents but for some wasteful finishing.

Charlie Wyke, Josh Scowen and Chris Maguire all went close for the Black Cats in the first half, while Max Power and Bailey Wright spurned glorious chances to increase the lead in the second.

The result sees Phil Parkinson’s charges remain fifth in the table with 14 points from their opening six games.

Gooch was one of the standout performers for Sunderland on the night, impressing at right wing-back.

He caused Crewe plenty of problems down the flank and weighed in with numerous superb crosses, including the one which culminated in the Sunderland winner.
