'Sublime', 'sensational': Media stunned by Liverpool 17-year-old's display v Milan yesterday

Liverpool rounded off their mid-season friendly programme with an emphatic 4-1 win over AC Milan in the Dubai Super Cup on Friday.

Darwin Nunez bagged a brace for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds against the Serie A side at the Al-Maktoum Stadium.

With Liverpool facing Manchester City in the League Cup on Thursday, it was the ideal boost in terms of preparations.

Liverpool led after just five minutes, courtesy of Mohamed Salah.

Joel Matip embarked on a forward run and combined with Roberto Firmino to set up Salah for an easy finish.

However, Milan equalised on 29 minutes through Alexis Saelemaekers, who cut inside and fired past Caoimhin Kelleher.

Four minutes before the break, Liverpool went in front again as Thiago Alcantara fired home from the edge of the box.

Klopp resisted making any substitutions at the interval, instead saving them for just before the hour and onwards.

Two substitutes combined for goal number three, as Bobby Clark played a superb pass for Darwin Nunez to finish on 82 minutes.

Another sub, Ben Doak, helped make it four as he raced down the right wing and squared for Nunez to tap in.

In the ensuing mandatory post-match penalty shootout, Liverpool lost 4-3.

‘Impactful’

While Liverpool’s performance was great news in terms of their upcoming cup fixture, there were also promising long-term signs too.

One of those was Clark’s performance, the 17-year-old showing Klopp and co how bright his future is at Anfield.

He caught the eye with an amazing pass to set up Nunez for his first of two goals.

Media outlets covering the game loved what they saw from Clark.

The Liverpool Echo gave the teenager a 7 out of 10 for his efforts on the day.

‘Played Nunez in for 3-1 with a sensational pass,’ they wrote.

‘The inch-perfect ping flew across the turf and into his team-mate’s path to tuck away and seal the result.

‘Scores highly for that alone.’

Meanwhile, Liverpool World went with 7.5 out of 10 for Clark.

‘Through-ball for Nunez’s first goal was sumptuous for someone who’s just 17,’ they wrote. ‘Scored in the shootout.’

And 90Min gave Clark a 7 out of 10 rating.

‘Came on and immediately played a sublime pass through to Nunez to register an assist,’ they wrote. ‘Impactful.’
