'Struck gold there': Michael Beale raves about 'fantastic' Rangers player

Former Glasgow Rangers coach Michael Beale has hailed Ibrox central defender Connor Goldson as ‘fantastic’.

Beale was part of the setup which helped bring Goldson to the Scottish Premiership during Steven Gerrard’s reign, but Giovanni van Bronckhorst took over.

In an interview with the Times, Beale said he is happy that Goldson has committed his future to Glasgow Rangers for the next four years.

Beale went down to Aston Villa with Steven Gerrard, but has now moved to Queens Park Rangers as manager, where he succeeded former Ibrox boss Mark Warburton.

Beale calls Goldson ‘fantastic’

“Connor has been fantastic. You’ve got to remember we recruited a player who wasn’t playing, who’d had a heart problem the year before and who has gone on to play 98 per cent of the games for Rangers afterwards,” he said.

“When you’re going through that medical and the recruitment process there will always be questions from the outside, from media and fans, about why this guy hasn’t been playing football. But you have to trust your instincts and more often than not we got it right.

“You’re not going to get every one right. But in terms of Connor Goldson we struck gold there. I’m absolutely delighted he’s signed another four years. It was essential for Gio [manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst] and Rangers moving forward.

“Connor has ridden the waves of Glasgow: the good and the bad, the ups and downs, the criticism and then the euphoria. He’s come out of it all as a real leader. I’m delighted for him and his family that they will be staying in Glasgow.”

Rangers had an exceptional season in terms of their cup progression, and the goal next time around has to be getting their title back.

Goldson will be a big part of that, as well as the other recruitment that van Bronckhorst can get done between now and the window closing.

As for Beale, he has taken his first step towards being a number one in his own right and it will be interesting to see how he gets on.
