'Strong': Newcastle-linked Championship star is just like Patrick Vieira, according to his ex-coach
Sky Sports revealed yesterday that Newcastle are interested in signing Championship side Sheffield United’s star midfielder Sander Berge in the January transfer window.
A lot is expected of the Magpies in next month’s window. Newcastle have definitely improved under Eddie Howe, but the threat of relegation is still very big, and they need a lot of help to secure safety.
The January window will be the new Newcastle owners’ first opportunity to show the world how different they are from Mike Ashley. The Toon’s current position in the league table makes it difficult for them to attract the biggest names, but a few talented young players who know the English game well can be brought onboard.
Berge is one such player and he has been compared to Arsenal legend and current Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira.
Newcastle-linked Sander Berge was once compared to Patrick Vieira by his ex-coach
Kjetil Rekdal coached Berge when he was at Valerenga a few years ago and he delivered his verdict on the midfielder in an interview with The Times a few days after he completed his move to Sheffield United.
He said: “When I brought him back to Valerenga I compared Sander to Patrick Vieira. He’s tall, strong and fast for his stature. He is also not afraid to ask for the ball and will always do something with it.
“Sander has a good pass. He made an incredible progression in a short time. It’s a shame we have to let such a young talent go, but that’s just how it goes in football.”
Berge may have had the potential to become the next Vieira, but he is yet to fulfil that at the top level.
There was a lot of hype around the Norwegian when he joined Sheffield United almost two years ago. He was viewed by many as a star in the making, but things just haven’t worked out for him.
However, there is definitely a quality player there and he needs a brilliant manager to get the best out of him. Howe may just be that man and if he can sign Berge and keep him fit until the end of the season, Newcastle’s chances of survival will go up considerably.
It will be interesting to see if the Blades will let him leave next month.
