‘Strong again’, ‘great night’: Some fans praise Spurs defender’s latest international display

Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty was in action for the Republic of Ireland against England in last night’s international friendly.

Though the Boys in Green had a night to forget in a 3-0 defeat, the £15million Spurs summer signing was one of his nation’s better players.

Doherty, a right wing-back by trade, was deployed at left-back, a position in which he has some experience from his time at Wolves.

The 28-year-old had several combative duels with Reece James and was relatively comfortable, with much of the danger coming down the opposite flank.

Admittedly, he was pinned back for large amounts of the game and was unable to contribute much to his team’s attacking play.

Nonetheless, Doherty’s display did get some praise for his display on the night:

Harry Maguire headed England into the lead 18 minutes into the game before Jadon Sancho doubled the hosts’ advantage on the half-hour mark with a low finish into the bottom corner.

In the second half, Bukayo Saka won a penalty for England which Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted in the 56th minute.

England and Ireland are in Nations League action for the remainder of the international break, the Three Lions facing Belgium and England, while the Boys in Green take on Wales and Bulgaria.
