Real Sociedad striker Willian Jose has claimed he turned down an offer to join Newcastle United.
The Brazilian says there was an offer ‘last year’ but he was happy enough with the Spanish outfit and therefore didn’t push for an exit.
Speaking to Marca, he said: “For me the best team is Real Madrid and then Barcelona. I could be in the Premier [League] but I am in the right place.
“I want to play one day in the Premier [League] but now I am happy here. I had an option to go to Newcastle in last year, I’m happy at Real Sociedad and I ended up staying.”
Jose has been with Sociedad since 2016 and has enjoyed a fruitful spell with the Basque club, scoring 49 goals in 117 appearances.
The 27-year-old has begun the current season in decent form, hitting four in his first nine.
TBR’s view – Jose faring better than Joelinton
Jose’s comments will disappoint Magpies fans, who are watching Joelinton struggle to perform in the Premier League.
The £40 million signing from Hoffenheim (BBC Sport) has only one goal so far and appears to be suffering from a lack of confidence and a lack of creativity behind him.
Jose, a similarly-built Brazilian, is more experienced than his fellow South American and might have been a better buy, although it is obviously very early days for Joelinton.
