Glenn Whelan was one of eight Aston Villa stars to be released this summer following the club’s promotion to the Premier League – and Stoke City fans want him back on Twitter.
Villa confirmed on their website that 35-year-old Whelan is set to leave the club at the end of his contract, along with Albert Adomah, Ritchie De Laet, Tommy Elphick, Mark Bunn, Alan Hutton, Mile Jedinak and Micah Richards.
The 85-time Ireland international has impressed for Villa since joining the club from Stoke two seasons ago. Clocking up 73 appearances in all competitions, fans have been impressed with his dedication and leadership.
Even during 2018-19, he has played 38 times in all competitions despite the gruelling nature of the Championship supposedly being too much for some 35-year-olds.
Despite his consistency, Whelan was released at the end of his contract by Villa and is now on the lookout for a new side. In his last match for Villa, he made a costly mistake that saw West Brom score.
Stoke City fans reacted to the news that Whelan is now a free agent, and Potters fans are keen to bring the veteran back to the Britannia Stadium – where he made 337 appearances in all competitions for the Staffordshire-based side.
If I’m honest, I’d take Whelan back in a heartbeat, and yes, I’d play him regularly. He knows the club inside out, he knows what the badge means to the supporters, and he’s someone who can actually put in a tackle when others won’t… ‼️ pic.twitter.com/dX0bzCqoKP
