Wigan Athletic midfielder Nick Powell is edging closer to a switch to Stoke City, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
They report that the silky 25-year-old playmaker has caught the eye of Potters boss Nathan Jones as he looks to get his squad in shape for an assault on Championship promotion.
Powell’s contract with the Latics is coming to an end, making him something of a bargain if he can showcase his maverick qualities on the ball at the Bet365 Stadium.
Scottish champions Celtic apparently took a shine to the Englishman as well, with TeamTalk reporting back in April that the Bhoys were eyeing up a summer swoop for Powell.
It’s not all that often that a player of Powell’s gifts becomes available on a free transfer and he has the flair Celtic need if they are to maintain their position at the top of Scottish football.
He can be an up and down player, but is capable of winning matches on his own and could perhaps go up a level given the exposure to European football that Celtic could offer.
The fact that Sir Alex Ferguson signed Powell for Manchester United indicates the level of talent he has – it’s just a case of getting it on a regular basis.
