A bizarre refereeing performance
Match officials unquestionably have an incredible challenging job, something that is even more prevalent in the Premier League where their performances comes under intense scrutiny from spectators, clubs and the media alike. With this in mind it seems somewhat unfair to criticise Roger East’s performance at the Bet 365 Stadium, but he made a number of debateable decisions in a contest that was quickly turning ill-tempered.
Firstly, the match official turned down an early penalty shout when Calum Wilson was brought down by Ryan Shawcross early in the match, despite the fact that the Stoke defender appeared to make no contact with the ball. Then in the second half he did award a spot-kick, albeit for the home side, when Bojan went down questionably in the area with minimal contact. There was then the peculiar moment when Wilson appeared to throw the ball forcefully into a section of the home supporters, something that East chose to overlook, before a number of number of feisty altercations between players occurred as the game came to a close.
Referees certainly have a difficult job, but this was not Roger East’s greatest moment.
