‘Still top of the league’… Chris Sutton reacts to Robbie Savage’s latest Celtic claim after defeat to Hearts

Celtic’s home defeat to Hearts is one that has been coming. The fans have been seeing it for a long time now as Brendan Rodgers continues to struggle to get a tune out of his team.

The Celtic manager seemed to have turned the corner with the brilliant win against Feyenoord midweek in the Champions League but yesterday, the Bhoys just seemed to slip back into ‘St Johnstone mode‘ as the Edinburgh side waltzed out of Parkhead with all three points.

Now, the race for the Scottish Premiership has really been blown wide open which sparked BBC pundit, Robbie Savage, to take a swing at Celtic.

Robbie Savage says Celtic are a club in ‘crisis’

Immediately after the full-time whistle had blown, Savage asked his listeners on BBC 606 if they wanted to hear from fans of ‘crisis club’ Celtic to which Chris Sutton immediately questioned with his ‘still top of the league’ reply.

Savage: “Who else do we want to hear from? What about crisis club Celtic?”

Sutton: “Crisis club Celtic? Still top of the league, an insipid performance today by all accounts and there are Celtic fans out there who will blame the board.

“They can blame the fact that there’s a section of the Celtic support which still aren’t allowed inside Celtic Park.

“But surely Brendan Rodgers has to take some responsibility. He’s gone back, last season it was Angeball, but the level of performance has really dropped this season and Brendan has to carry the can for that.”

Like Sutton, I think crisis is a strong word to use. I remember a real crisis at Celtic back in the 90’s when they had no money and no trophies and this situation is far from that.

Yes, the performances of late have been shockingly poor and the drop in standards since Ange Postecoglou left has been alarming.

But crisis? Not yet. Let’s reassess that after the Glasgow Derby on the 30th of December where we now have a genuine top-of-the-table league clash.
