‘Still don’t understand’… Confused £32m player says something ‘strange’ happened to him at Tottenham

Sergio Reguilon has had quite a bizarre season.

The Spaniard started the campaign as a Spurs player before getting a deadline day loan move to Manchester United that was cut short in January.

Reguilon then returned to Tottenham for a few weeks before being shipped out to Brentford in January.

To say that the left-back has been mucked about a bit would be an understatement.

Now, speaking to The Times, Reguilon has been discussing his departure from Tottenham, and he says that he still can’t understand why Spurs got rid of him, claiming that the messages he got in pre-season suggested he would be in the squad.

Sergio Reguilon confused by Tottenham situation

The £32m man spoke about his Spurs exile.

“I didn’t understand and still don’t understand the situation,” Reguilon said.

“During pre-season I was very happy and he [Postecoglou] was happy with me, also the staff. I was playing like a normal player, all the games,” he says. “The week before, I went to see him. ‘You want me at the club?’ ‘Yes, I have to do a list and you are in my squad’. It was strange. The next day I was out of the training and I didn’t know what happened.

“I know I can play in Spurs, but in many aspects in football the player doesn’t have control. And I don’t want to stay to sit in the stadium watching. I am 27, I have too much football to live. I don’t understand why one day is ‘yes’ and next day is ‘no’ but . . . I don’t think it’s performance reason, I think it’s another reason, this is football, this is business.

Strange

It has to be said that this is a strange situation.

Tottenham don’t necessarily have the best depth at left-back, so the fact that Reguilon has been cast aside is a bit weird in our view.

However, Ange Postecoglou will have his reasons and as it’s his team he’s entitled to his view of this situation.

Reguilon may think he should have a part to play at Spurs, but if his manager disagrees, that’s all that matters.
