Former Tottenham and Everton star Steven Pienaar has lavished praise on Aston Villa player Jack Grealish for his performance against Spurs yesterday.

Grealish led the Villans as they were cruelly beaten 3-2 thanks to a stoppage-time goal by Son Heung-min.

Villa led early on after an own goal by Toby Alderweireld, although the Belgian restored parity shortly afterwards.

Bjorn Engels scored an equaliser for Villa but Tottenham weren’t to be denied. With four minutes of added time on the clock, Son pounced and broke Villa hearts.

Pienaar played 10 times for Tottenham during his career, spending most of his Premier League days playing at Everton.

He took to Twitter to heap praise on Grealish after another standout performance from the 24-year-old.

Aston Villa have a one-point cushion on West Ham who are currently in 18th place and their relegation battle is real.

The Villans must find some consistency to pull themselves clear of the drop zone or face the realistic prospect of an immediate return to the Championship.

Grealish has been in remarkable form this season and looks to be on the cusp of an international call-up from the England boss, Gareth Southgate.

During the 2019/20 campaign, Grealish has scored nine goals and registered eight assists and summer interest will be high.

Fight

The only chance Villa have of keeping their star man will be by staying in the top-flight.

Pienaar knows all about trickery having showcased an array of talent during his playing days.

Grealish needs to keep his head down and continue playing well to steer Villa clear of the mess they find themselves in.

During the summer his future will almost certainly be reassessed.
