Everton shocked Tottenham in North London on Sunday afternoon, running out 1-0 winners to kick-off their 2020/21 campaign in style.

The Toffees were brilliant the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and won the game courtesy of a Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal in the second half.

Carlo Ancelotti will hope to revive Everton this season after an underwhelming campaign during 2019/20.

He has added Allan from Napoli, James Rodriguez from Real Madrid and Abdoulaye Doucoure from Watford to his ranks for the new season.

All three were in action against Spurs and former Toffees favourite Steven Pienaar was certainly impressed, taking to Twitter to speak of his delight.

Pienaar was a popular figure during his time at Goodison Park and knows what it takes to succeed at the club.

In 229 games for the Blues, he scored 26 goals and registered 49 assists before eventually moving to Tottenham in 2012.

Pienaar was clearly more impressed with Everton during Sunday’s game and chose the three new players as the ones for most praise.

Everton have recruited sensibly this summer and three new boys could prove pivotal this season.

The Toffees finished 12th last season and there’s no hiding from the fact that it simply wasn’t good enough.

Under the watchful eye of Ancelotti, however, there is enough to suggest that the Italian can eventually get it right.

Everton beating Tottenham on Sunday needs to be just the start for the blue half of Liverpool and challenging for Europe needs to be on the agenda this season.
