TBR Football understands that Rangers have decided that Steven Gerrard is their first choice to become their next manager.
The Liverpool legend enjoyed a brilliant three-year spell in charge of Rangers up to 2021 before he took charge of Aston Villa.
Gerrard secured the Scottish Premiership title, which saw The Gers go unbeaten during the season.
Upon leaving Rangers, Gerrard took charge of Villa before his most recent post was in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq, who parted ways last year.

The 45-year-old has been considering his options, but is not in a hurry to return to management. However, sources have confirmed to TBR Football that Rangers co-owner Andrew Cavenagh and his American partners have identified Gerrard as their top choice.
Sources: Rangers want Steven Gerrard reunion
Sources have confirmed to TBR Football that Gerrard is their first choice and talks are due this week, but it is far from a done deal.
Russell Martin was axed earlier this month after a tough short spell in charge. Fans were left furious with the club in the aftermath of Martin’s spell, but the appointment of Gerrard could go some way to making amends.
The club have held talks with others, including Sean Dyche, but Gerrard is the man they want to return and they are set to make an offer to him

TBR Football exclusively revealed that Dyche would not take the Rangers job despite being attracted by the possibility of reuniting with Ibrox chief Kevin Thelwell, who served as sporting director during Dyche’s spell with Everton.
However, Gerrard has been on the agenda at Ibrox since Philippe Clement was relieved of his duties towards the end of last season. The Scouser is the last Rangers boss to have won the Scottish Premiership.
Now Gerrard is set for a sensational return to Scotland after a nine-month absence from management, but he will face a monumental challenge to overturn the Gers’ fortunes this year with an already nine-point gap to Glaswegian rivals Celtic.
How does Steven Gerrard feel about returning to Rangers?
TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has revealed that Gerrard will only return to Ibrox if he feels the project is right at this stage of his managerial career.
Bailey states: “Steven Gerrard has agreed to meet Rangers’ owners, which is a positive for the club.
“As it stands, Gerrard is unsure about whether to return, but his stance is seemingly softening, and he wants to meet the new owners face-to-face, which will happen in the coming days.

“He wants to know the plans and whether the project meets his own ambitions. He loves the club, but he won’t let heart rule head, as I am told – he will only come back if it is right.
“For their part, Rangers believe they can convince Gerrard to return.”
